Formally called the Iowa Strengthening Families Program and based on the Strengthening Families Program developed at the University of Utah, the long range goal of the SFP curriculum is reduced substance use and behavior problems during adolescence. The seven week intervention utilizes a model in which parents and children learn individual skills, then are brought together to improve family communication and practices. |

CCI helps Des Moines community residents become aware of strategies and provides relevant information based on research and contact with other grassroots organizations around the country, helps develop local leadership abilities, and provides a forum for neighborhood groups to discuss issues, seek solutions for drug-related problems, and promote neighborhood revitalization. CCI has addressed certain drug abuse problems with unique solutions. For example, touch-tone public phones were changed to rotary-dial phones so drug dealers could not access their beepers. |
