The Front Porch Alliance was launched by the Mayor of Indianapolis in Fall 1997 as a cooperative effort among city government, churches, synagogues, mosques, and neighborhood organizations, to enhance the "community-building" work of these entities. The City of Indianapolis recognizes that government, by itself, cannot solve problems such as teen pregnancy, truancy, substance abuse, and juvenile crime. Instead, full commitment from the entire city (businesses, labor, the media, and philanthropic organizations) is needed to fortify these neighborhood-based organizations that are specially suited to restore communities and transform lives.
