The Asset-Based Community Development Institute (ABCD) was established in 1995 by the Community Development Program at Northwestern's Institute for Policy Research. Its purpose is to proliferate the findings of John Kretzmann and John L. McKnight's two decades of research on capacity-building community development. To this end, a major focus of the ABCD Institute has been the production of resources and tools for community builders involved in the process of capacity-based initiatives, helping them identify, nurture, and mobilize neighborhood assets.

Horizons Community Services is the Midwest's largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered social service agency. Through education, outreach, counseling, and advocacy, Horizons confronts homophobia and its effects. Trained volunteers and professionals work together to provide services in a lesbian and gay setting. Our goal is to support the development of healthy and integrated lives. The Anti-Violence Project specifically works to educate the larger community about hate crimes and provides court assistance for victims of hate crimes.

The North Halsted Community Safety Coalition is a community based and community oriented organization whose goal is to provide proactive protection in order to improve safe conditions for gay and straight residents and visitors in Eastern Lakeview . This organization was formed as a result of our concern over the recent series of hate crimes committed in East Lakeview as well as the Matthew Shepard murder in October 1998.

The Project to Combat Vias Violence is the only comprehensive program int he Midwest that provides pro bono repsentation for all the classes protected by the Illinois Hate Crime Act. Project activities are designed to provide an effective partnership between victims and attorneys, police, prosecutors, clergy, community leaders, and health and social service professionals. Hundereds of community volunteers work with the Project to present educational forums and workshops, with a particular emphasis on high-risk neighborhoods and groups.
