The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) was formed in 1973 as the agency responsible for advising the State in matters pertaining to healthand the environment. It has the authority to monitor, control, and prevent pollution, unsanitary conditions, and the spread of communicable disease. DHEC's programs focus on personal health services, environmental regulatory activities, and health regulatory activities. Personal health services include child health, family planning and maternal care, chronic and communicable disease care, home health care, and migrant health care.
