Healthnet: Connecticut Consumer Health Information Network was initiated by the library of the University of Connecticut Health Center in January 1985. The purpose of Healthnet is to help make consumer health information available to Connecticut's residents through their local public libraries.

Healthnet programs and services include:

·  Training of public librarians in medical reference tools and techniques;

·  Reference assistance to help public librarians answer consumer health questions from the public;

·  Identification and evaluation of sources of consumer health information, including books, pamphlets, audiovisuals, on-line and CD-ROM databases, and Internet resources;

·  Preparation of subject bibliographies on consumer health topics;

·  Consultation on collection development related to consumer health information;

·  Consultation on developing and presenting community health programs at local public libraries;

·  Publication of a newsletter to keep librarians informed of new consumer health information issues and resources;

·  Development of publicity programs and materials to promote public libraries as sources of consumer health information;

·  Special projects to help public libraries develop consumer health information collections and services.

The Mental Health Association of Connecticut, Inc. is a statewide, private, non-profit agency dedicated to the promotion of mental health, the prevention of mental illness, and improved care and treatment of persons with mental illnesses.

Among the program and services are:

·  A statewide toll-free telephone number providing Connecticut residents with access to referrals to mental health clinics and private practitioners.

·  Pamphlets on a wide range of mental health topics available and distributed to support groups, businesses, at health fairs and as requested by the general public.

·  Support groups which provide emotional support and information in order to empower and encourage members to become informed consumers.

·  Children's initiatives which provide advocacy, education, and support to children with mental health needs and for their families.

·  Advocacy and support for public policies which are responsive to the needs of people with mental health problems as well as the general public.

·  Residential, psychosocial rehabilitation and supported employment services for people with mental illness.

Operates Infoline, a help by telephone service that links callers to appropriate help and coaches them through crises. The also hold events and educational seminars in the local area. The Infoline has specialized services for childcare, children's health, birth to three, and Husky health Infoline.

Established in 1994, the Office of Health Care Access (OHCA) oversees Connecticut's health care delivery system to ensure that access to quality health care is made available in a fiscally prudent fashion. OHCA assists consumers who have questions about the cost of their hospital treatment or their financial obligation for hospital care. OHCA also provides a handbook with indepth information about health insurance contracts, financial assistance options for health care and/or health care services, and hospital billing information.
